Regional Community Dimensions
Torpoint Community College has worked closely with the local community of Torpoint & Rame. Our students contributed greatly to the Guinness World Record for the longest bunting. In tutor groups students designed and made their own bunting assisting Torpoint in being entered into the Guinness Book of Records.
The students supported the Friends of Thanckes Park with the Queen Elizabeth 11 Jubilee Fields Challenge enabling the fields, which are adjacent to Torpoint Community College, to be preserved for future generations.
A Torpoint Branch of CATS (Community Action Through Sport) was successfully launched a year ago. Students from Torpoint Community College, our feeder primary schools, Police Cadets and members of the Torpoint and Rame Youth Project were nominated for their volunteering within the community. Diversionary Projects have been supported by Plymouth Raiders Basketball Club. Recently, The Lions, Torpoint and CATS have joined together on a project to promote young people volunteering in our community.
At Torpoint Community College we work very closely with the Torpoint & Rame Community Sports Centre which is managed by the Y.M.C.A. Badminton Club is run by Chris Still, Chairman of Torpoint Badminton Club, as an after school club on a Tuesday evening at the Sports Centre.
The Netball Development sessions, run in conjunction with Torpoint Ladies Netball Club, is working well.
The Torpoint & Rame Active Community Sports Network meets monthly at College. Members of the group are representative of CHAT, Friends of Thanckes Park, Torpoint & Rame Sports Centre, Torpoint Badminton Club, Crafthole & District Churches Table Tennis Club, St Columba & Torpoint Rugby Club, Torpoint Athletic Football Club, CATS, Torpoint Town Council and staff from Torpoint Community College. The group is presently working to provide an All Weather Turf Pitch facility for College and Community Use. It is proposed this facility will be managed by the Y.M.C.A Torpoint & Rame Community Sports Centre. Planning permission has been granted. The group is now working to secure the funding to bring the project to completion.
Torpoint Community College Sports Leaders continue to volunteer at Community Events. Most recently, the Year 10 students supported the Funfino Football Tournament at Carbeile School. Eighteen Sports supported the competition in the role of referee and officials.
We also enjoy working with our primary colleagues to join the pathways for children, all the way from Nursery through to Sixth Form.
