Duke of Edinburgh Award News – November 2014

Assemblies took place in October to show TCC students how enjoyable taking part in this Award can be.  Following these assemblies, 12 students have already completed their enrolment forms (1 Gold and 11 Bronze) and many more have taken forms home wishing to enrol.  Please may I remind those students wishing to take part in this great opportunity to return their enrolment forms to me (Mrs Trotter) no later than Friday 21st November, sooner if possible!  Those who have already enrolled and paid, registration details and packs will be given to you week commencing 24th November.

During the assemblies, I was honoured to hand out Silver Certificates and Pins to 5 Silver Award achievers, who successfully completed their Award this summer, Tom Hicks, Eleanor Rendle, Nicole Brisley, Sam Richards and (by post) Aaron Cullerton.  These students should be very proud of themselves, they have worked extremely hard and I feel privileged to have been able to share some of their journey with them, as is Mrs Porter – as I said in the assembly, “no matter how much money you have, you cannot buy the Certificate and Pins, they have to be earned!!  Well done all of you and may we take this opportunity of wishing Tom, Eleanor and Nicole all the best in TCC Sixth Form, good luck to Sam who has now joined the Navy and also best of luck to Aaron who is undertaking an apprenticeship at Princess Yachts, you are all Superstars!

We are also extremely proud of our first Gold Award achiever, Leanne Andrews – what a huge achievement – Leanne took part in such things as the Tall Ships Race for her residential, she volunteered at Torpoint Children’s Centre for her Volunteering Section and for her expedition, she joined students from Treviglas Community College on the Brecon Beacons for 4 days and 3 nights and I know from experience how unforgiving the Brecon Beacons can be, even in the Summer!  Leanne is now at Winchester University and we wish her all the very best for the future.

A huge well done also goes to the following students who received Sectional Certificates for completing parts of their Bronze Award this year – James Fortt (3 sections), Matt Jenkins (3 sections), Lisa Smyth (2 sections), Kaitlin Hirst (2 sections), Nate White (2 sections), Lucy Hallard (3 sections) and William Milliner (3 sections).  The Bronze qualifying expedition for those who have already completed the practice expedition (great pictures below!) will be in the Looe/Polperro area on 28th and 29th March 2015.

There will be a Bronze practice expedition for new and existing participants in the Torpoint and Rame area on 14th and 15th March 2015 and the latest training schedule can be found on the College website at http://www.torpoint.cornwall.sch.uk/dofe-training-programme-201415/.

Can all participants please familiarise themselves with these dates and don’t forget that expedition training will begin in earnest in January 2015 with drop in sessions running every Wednesday lunch time in room 18 (these started in October).

Keep up the good work everyone.

Mrs Trotter
