GB Olympian Visit

Torpoint Community College students have recently been visited by former Team GB Waterpolo captain Craig Figes, in his new role of Athlete Mentor for Sky Sports Living for Sport.

Sky Sports Living for Sport is a free UK secondary schools initiative, delivered in partnership with the charity Youth Sport Trust, which uses sport stars and sport skills to boost confidence, change behaviours, increase attainment and improve life skills.

Pupils involved in Sky Sports Living for Sport will also be able to share the activities they have completed, the skills they have learnt and their accomplishments on and off the playing field.

During the visit Craig shared his experiences with the group and used his story of triumph over adversity to motivate the pupils to be the best they can be.

Craig commented, ‘As a Sky Sports athlete mentor I have the best job in the world working to enthuse and encourage young people through the power of sport and show them that with a little hard work they can achieve anything. I had a great visit to Torpoint Community College and worked with an outstanding group. They were fantastic throughout the entire day, worked brilliantly on all the tasks and challenges that I set them and really were one of the best groups I’ve worked with this year. They seemed to have great fun and I hope they proved to themselves that if they keep practicing the ‘6 keys to success’ they already have all the skills required to achieve their dreams’.

Curriculum Leader of Learning for PE, Mr Evans, said “this is the third year we have participated in this scheme and it has once again been a fantastic experience for the staff and students at TCC to meet and work with such a hardworking, enthusiastic and inspirational sportsman in person.”

All students involved said what a fantastic experience it had been.
