Parents / Carers

The importance of parents!

If you are a parent then you were your child's first teacher. You play a crucial role in helping your child learn. At Torpoint Community College we believe strongly that children learn best when teachers and parents work together.

You don't need to be an expert in any subject to help your child to enjoy learning and do well at school.

National Readathon

Readathon is THE UK’S BIGGEST NATIONAL SPONSORED READING EVENT which has in the last 25 years raised nearly £22 million for children and young people with serious illnesses. It works just like a sponsored walk or swim, except that the children read books in exchange for pledges of money.

Readathon works with two wonderful organisations who spend your donations, primarily, helping
children and young people in Britain suffering from cancer, Hodgkin’s disease, leukaemia, epilepsy,
blood disorders or acquired brain injury.

Why Do Schools Need Governors?

Through their representation of the wider school community (this includes the parents, school staff and other members of that community), governors help their school improve and provice the best possible education for the pupils.

Governors play three key roles

  1. They provide a strategic overview
  2. They act as a critical friend to the school
  3. They ensure accountability.

At Torpoint Community College there is a vacancy for a Parent Governor. If you are interested and would like to know more please contact the college or use the links below.

Worries?

Has your child a worry about school that they find hard to share. This might be about friendship issues, bullying or finding school life difficult. Please try and encourage your child to share and, if they need to, email the "worries" line to get a chance to chat to a teacher about this. We might arrange for a student mentor to meet with them or they might have an idea for someone they would like to talk to and we can arrange this for them.

Whatever it is, they can let their worries out by talking to somebody. All messages will be treated sensitively.

Planned Absences

It is important that parents/carers send letters to their child’s tutor or college reception providing details of planned absences e.g. dental or medical appointment.

This will ensure that students are correctly accounted for on the college registration system, and that Truancy Calls are not sent unnecessarily.

How can I help my child with homework?
It is estimated that parents spend an average of six hours a week on helping their children with homework. If you show interest and give support early on, it will encourage your child to develop positive attitudes to learning, in and out of school. (BBC - Schools)

Children's & Young People's Version of the Joint Area Review Report

Cornwall's Children's Services Authority area underwent a Joint Area Review (JAR) in 2008.

A requirement of the Joint Area Review is to communicate the findings to children and young people. As part of the Action Plan that was created following the JAR Report, a leaflet has been produced that explains the objectives of the Review and what the inspectors had to say about Cornwalls Children & Young People's services, including health, social care and education.
