Poetry By Heart

Poetry By Heart

On Thursday January 9th TCC held its very first Poetry By Heart competition. Three students – Beth, Hannah and Alex, recited their selected poems from the published Poetry By Heart Anthology, in front of five esteemed judges – Mrs. Hazeldine, Miss. Lockett, Mrs. Wallis and Mr. Pease.  This prestigious line-up also welcomed a special guest judge to the college, Mr. David Woolley – a published poet – and who with fellow poet Ann Gray runs the Bodmin Moor Poetry Festival and other literary events across Cornwall.  He also set up and runs Westwords Poetry – publishing imprint in Cornwall for the past 25 years.

It was a wonderful event which saw our students recite by heart two poems – one pre-1914 and one post 1914 poem in spectacular style!  They were a credit to our college and it was a pleasure to be a part of such a fantastic competition.  The scoring was exceptionally close but the overall winner was Beth and the Runner-up was Hannah.  Beth will now be entered in the County stage of the competition, taking place at Truro Community Library on January 29th, and Hannah will act as her understudy.  These students will now need to memorise an additional poem from the World War 1 section of the Anthology in time for the county contest.

All staff and guests present couldn’t have been more proud of how our students rose to this challenge, entertaining and ‘wowing’ us with their confidence and commitment.  We all hope that this will be the start of many more years being part of this UK wide event and we wish Beth all the very best of luck in the upcoming county heat.
