Poetry By Heart

This year TCC have entered the prestigious ‘Poetry By Heart’ competition, which is a UK wide competition open to all schools for students in Years 10-13. Students take part in a competition in their schools by reciting from memory a Pre-1914 poem and a post 1914 poem from the Anthology published on the Poetry By Heart website – poetrybyheart.org.uk

Judges use criteria set by the organisers and select one student, and an understudy, to go forward and take part in the County competition this year taking place on Thursday January 29th at Truro Community Library.

If they are successful when competing against other schools in our county, and they are selected to take part in the National competition, the student and teacher are invited to travel and stay at Cambridge University to take part in the finals. We will receive a full dinner on the evening of arrival, speak with and be entertained by published poets and enjoy a feast of poetry from students from all over the country!

Our Poetry Slam – Open mike club beginning next Tuesday 25th November has been set up to encourage all ages of students to take part in, enjoy listening to and be involved in an exciting new wave of appreciation and hopefully a real love of poetry!

This is our first year entering the competition and so next year we will be creating a competition within school especially for KS3 students who want to take part and prepare them in readiness for their exams and the UK competition in Years 10-13!
